Den tyska ”isprinsessan” Sahra Wagenknecht har nått omedelbara framgångar med sitt konservativa vänsterparti BSW. Nu är frågan om väljarna nästa vecka ger henne mandat att hålla AFD borta från makten.  

En ny termin har börjat och studenter i alla åldrar studerar språk vid landets lärosäten. De är dock alltför få för att vi ska kunna säkra landets behov av språkligt kompetent arbetskraft och ofta försvåras deras studier på grund av bristfälliga förkunskaper. Engelskans starka ställning liksom mångas flerspråkighet visar på en stor potential, men incitament saknas i skolan för att lära sig flera språk, trots att både näringsliv, industri och offentlig sektor återkommande efterfrågar goda språkkunskaper hos de anställda.

Det har regelbundet skrivits debattartiklar om bristen på språkkunskaper i landet, och utredningar har gjorts under hela 2000-talet. Viljan att främja den flerspråkiga kompetensen hos Sveriges befolkning har dock varit svag oberoende av regering och trots att språklärare redan för 20 år sedan uppmärksammade det minskade intresset för moderna språk i skolan. Vi ser nu att trenden är fortsatt negativ. Tyska, det språk vi representerar, kan exempelvis inte längre erbjudas vid alla skolor, även om viljan finns: Det saknas helt enkelt behöriga lärare. För övriga främmande språk är situationen likartad. Läget är kritiskt!

Im Fokus dieses Beitrags steht die Diskurssemantik der semantischen Konzepte ostdeutsch* und (west)deutsch* im Kontext der sogenannten Oschmann-Debatte. Ausgelöst durch Dirk Oschmanns Bestseller Der Osten. Eine westdeutsche Erfindung (2023) hat diese Debatte eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit der medialen und diskursiven Dominanz westdeutscher Perspektiven sowie der Marginalisierung und Stigmatisierung ostdeutscher Identitätskonstruktionen angeregt. Unter anderem sieht Oschmann im öffentlichen Diskurs eine praktizierte Asymmetrie, die eine negativ konnotierte Ostidentität durch Fremdpositionierungen festschreibt. Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird dafür argumentiert, dass der asymmetrische Gebrauch von ostdeutsch* und (west)deutsch* seine Wurzeln bereits im geteilten Deutschland hat, und dass die Oschmann-Debatte zur Herausbildung einer gesamtdeutschen Identität wenig beigetragen hat, reproduziert sie doch eher die stereotypen Konzeptualisierungen des Ostens und der Ostdeutschen.

The volume you hold in your hands (or have opened on your screen) is a result of the editors’ observations and perhaps initially also only of the assumption of a current shift in societal understandings of majorities and minorities. Groups we had so far thought of as part of the majority, as part of what in German is labelled the Mehrheitsgesellschaft, have recently positioned themselves as threatened mi-norities to claim rights. We are well aware that the we of the observer’s position is of special importance in such a statement and that such statements are funda-mentally bound to one’s own affiliations. This is certainly also true for William Davies, whom we cite here as an example, because he makes similar observations quite accurately and rightly refers to debates about recognition: “The struggle for recognition has turned into an arms race, in which majority cultural identities deploy the language of minority rights in their defence. In contexts such as Brexit, liberals have also engaged in demands for identity recognition, with street pro-tests, flags and claims of cultural marginalization.” (Davies 2021: 85) 

The editors of this volume have combined their expertise in discourse, contradiction, minority and diversity studies to suggest a change of perspective from categorisations into societal minorities and majorities towards an analysis of marginalising and centralising discourses. For this purpose, we have gathered interdisciplinary-minded authors from linguistics, literary and religious studies, political and historical sciences. Their contributions focus on contradictions of religious and national belonging as well as intersections of religion and nation in many different regions of the world from the 18th century until today. While illustrating the diversity and contradictions of religious and national belonging across time and space, the chapters of the book contribute to an understanding of the dynamics of questions of belonging and the associated constant renegotiations of power within these discursive processes.

Obwohl es in denletzten Wochen in den Nachrichten vor allem darum gegangen war, war ichdoch überrumpelt und ungläubig: Gibt es jetzt wirklich Krieg? Wie der russische Angriff auf die Ukraine tatsächlich benannt werden soll, wird dieWelt in den nächsten Wochen beschäftigen.

The Sweden Democrats is a nationalist right-wing populist party with roots in neo-Nazism and white supremacist beliefs. The party has experienced continuous progress during the last decade in Sweden, attracting 20.5 per cent of the vote in the general election of 2022. A combination of discourse analytical methods is applied to study the comment sections of the party's official social media accounts during the EU election 2019 in order to explore what topics are most engaging to the supporters and what discursive strategies the supporters use to position themselves in relation to politicians, to other parties or to political topics. Particular attention is paid to the role of affirmative and evaluative practices to build ingroup identity.
