Abstract [en]

This paper reports on a survey of 198 early career researchers from Spain, which aimed to assess their knowledge and attitudes towards predatory journals. The results revealed that the primary characteristic of predatory journals is their fast acceptance and publication times, while many other features are similar to legitimate journals. The study recommends several actions, including raising awareness and providing mentorship, promoting ethical publishing practices, and allocating resources to early career researchers by academic institutions. The findings highlight the need for better education and support for researchers in identifying and avoiding predatory journals. The study's conclusions have implications for policymakers, academic institutions, and individual researchers seeking to maintain the integrity of scholarly publishing.

Abstract [en]

For developing nations to meet the demand for skills in the twenty-first century, TVET is essential. The TVET institution actively creates a skilled workforce to meet the needs of the nation's labour market to meet those demands. As a result, efforts are being made to improve the existing TVET institutions. This study looked into the difficulties faced by TVET institution managers when handling their relationships with collaboration. The quantitative approach used in this study was the survey design approach. The right respondents are chosen for this study using purposeful sampling techniques. A total of 53 directors of TVET institutions in Malaysia and 30 representatives from industry were chosen as respondents for this study. The Rasch measurement model was used to analyze the data. This study identified managerial skills and common barriers as the two main obstacles to the collaboration between Malaysian TVET institutions and industries. Technical, human, and conceptual skills are the three categories used to categorize managerial skill barriers. Technically, directors are unable to put knowledge into practice because they lack computer proficiency, managerial knowledge and experience, and methods and techniques for performance monitoring tools. Conceptually, directors struggle to plan long-term objectives, articulate strategies and comprehend the organizational structure of their industry. Finally, directors lack the ability to manage relationships between organizations and the drive to launch partnerships with the sector. While this was going on, the common TVET institution-industry collaboration barriers were grouped into four categories: governance issues, funding and financial issues, management issues in collaboration, and industry-institution culture issues.

Abstract [en]

The presentation in this paper is based on a research project funded by the Swedish Research Council. The focus of this study is to examine the role that vocational education and training (VET) played and still plays in relation to the challenges that stem/ed from structural changes and immigration that Sweden has experienced from the 1950s to today. From the mid-1800s to the 1990s, Sweden experienced major structural changes: a shift from an agrarian economy, to and industrial based economy and labour market and finally to a post-Fordist knowledge intensive economy and labour market. In this study, we investigate how VET responded to labour market needs that resulted in the shift from industrial economy and labour market to a post- industrial labour market. In addition, the focus is on the role that VET play/ed in the inclusion of immigrants/refugees from the 1950s to today.

The project is grounded on frame factor theory as presented by Lundgren (1989). The project consists of two interrelated studies: a historical study of VET and the changes in the VET system from the 1950s to today and two interview studies. The historical study will examine how the delivery and provision of VET has changed over time because of structural changes and immigration, and the role VET has played in the inclusion of immigrants to the labour market from the 1950s to today. In this study we will also look at changes in the organization and curriculum of the car mechanic vocational training from the 1950s to 2020. The historical study will not only shed light on how VET respond(ed) to structural changes and inclusion of immigrants in the Swedish work life from the 1950s to today but will also help to contextualize the interview studies and enrich our analysis of the interviews.

Abstract [en]

This article focuses on the study of academic plagiarism among freshmen university students enrolled in the degrees of Social Work and Social Education. Through a questionnaire applied to 913 students from 6 cohorts, the prevalence of plagiarism and some of the main factors associated with this phenomenon are analysed. The main results indicate that the students with the greatest tendency to plagiarize are associated with being male, younger, consider themselves to be worse students, value plagiarism less seriously, are poorly motivated by their studies and face academic tasks with a propensity to procrastinate. Finally, the students who plagiarize the most in their assignments are also the ones with the greatest propensity toward dishonest behaviour in other evaluation activities and the ones who attach the least seriousness to this fraud. The conclusions of the study indicate and provide areas for interventions aimed at promoting academic integrity and reducing fraudulent practices in higher education based on evidence.

Abstract [en]

Refugee youth in protracted humanitarian contexts are faced with limited access to quality education. They may sustain traumatic experiences from conflicts and discrimination yet have limited psychosocial support access. Comprehending the magnitude and effects of these challenges is vital for designing and executing educational interventions in such contexts. This study evaluates the implementation quality of the Youth Education Pack intervention through the lens of the Inter-agency Network for Education in Emergencies minimum standards framework. It explores the types of discrimination experienced by refugee youth in the Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya. Nine participants comprising refugee students (N = 2), former refugee students (N = 2), teachers (N = 3), and project supervisors (N = 2) participated in the study. The first author conducted interviews and observations in the camp. The data were qualitatively coded deductively and analysed in Nvivo 12. We found that the YEP intervention faced contextual challenges that hindered the achievement of the implementation quality standards outlined in the INEE minimum standards for education. Refugee youth and refugee teachers experienced various forms of discrimination, including at individual, institutional, and structural levels. We conclude that providing refugee youth with an inclusive and high-quality education is central to providing secure and long-term solutions to their challenges and adversities and may promote their psychosocial wellbeing.

Abstract [en]

This book is the seventh volume in the book series Emerging Issues in Research on Vocational Education & Training. The series is published by the research group VETYL (Vocational Education & Training/Yrkeskunnande och Lärande), at the Department of Education, Stockholm University, Sweden. VETYL was created in 2011 with twofold aims: contributing to the advance of knowledge in the intricate area of vocational education and training (VET) and strengthening the research basis of the teacher education program for VET that is offered at the Department of Education, Stockholm University. The Swedish term “yrkeskunnande och lärande” in the name of the research group translates as “vocational knowing” and indicates one of the major research concerns of the group. The research book series started primarily as dissemination venue of selected papers, after a peer review process first presented at the international conferences organized yearly since 2012 by our research group VETYL.

The conference has had two aims: becoming a forum for sharing state of the art research in the field of VET and serving as a forum for networking and cooperation. The Stockholm International Conference of Research in VET is one of the major academic events organised in Europe as part of the European Network for Vocational Education and Training (VETNET).Even though the primary source for our research book series has for long been the conference's papers, at present the research book series is open to contributions of other scholars in the field regardless of participation in the conference. This is particularly the case in this volume where researchers from different contexts submitted proposals of texts, dealing with different dimensions of the important theme of the role of vocational education and training in inclusion in work life, with specific focus on migrants. The title of this volume Migration and Inclusion in Work Life – The Role of VET is an umbrella for the presentation of research outcomes focusing on a variety of aspects influencing the inclusion in working life and the role that VET plays or could play. The main aim of this volume is to present current research in an area that at the present is getting major attention by policy makers as well as practitioners in Europe and other contexts. Migration and immigrant integration/inclusion has long been a contested issue in national and international politics as well as in research. With migration on the rise globally, integration faces many challenges. Usually, integration is associated with establishment into the labour market. Getting a job or some kind of employment is taken as a strong indicator of successful integration in the new country.VET, along with other measures, is expected to play a key role in the process of integration of immigrants in the economic and7social life of the host country. Successful inclusion becomes beneficial for all involved by reducing disparities, filling local labour market shortages, and improving livelihoods and social cohesion. VET systems and providers in most immigrant-receiving countries are trying to find effective ways to facilitate migrants’ labour market inclusion by means of specially designed training programs.

The contributions in this volume show a diversity in theoretical frameworks of reference and methodological grounds, ranging from empirically based texts to policy analysis. Even though some of the texts are case studies or national policy analyses they will surely be of interest to an international audience interested in this theme. This volume continues the tradition of our research book series to depict the diversity and complexity of research in the field of vocational education and training. We hope it will meet the expectations of a variety of readers including under-graduate students, in particular students in initial and in-service teacher training programs for VET, post-graduate students, and policy makers. Finally, we would like to thank the reviewers for valuable criticisms that helped to improve the contributions that are finally presented in this book.

Abstract [en]

This final chapter draws on some of the themes addressed in the previous chapters in the book. In particular it seeks to describe challenges that the Department has faced over the past decade, but it also addresses opportunities that arise as the Department celebrates its 10th anniversary. The Department of Education (Institutionen för Pedagogik och Didaktik, in short: IPD) developed through a merger of several departments from the independent Stockholm College for Teacher Education and the Department of Education at Stockholm University. The chapter discusses where we at the Department of Education are heading with regard to the three main university missions we have : teaching, research and collaboration. Finally, we need to actively contribute to expanding the knowledge base in our society with research that has arisen both through collaboration and on the basis of independent research. Here we must see the department as a larger “we”, where we with our different and complementary competences make it possible to continue to succeed in our social missions and to establish ourselves as clear actors in both national and international contexts. We have grown to be one of Stockholm University’s five largest departments over the years and currently have 174 people on our payroll at the time of writing in October 2021, a very large number of competent employees. Here we can see another challenge: to keep a large institution together.

Abstract [en]

The subject Educación Laboral is the Cuban equivalent to Technology Education in other education systems. The history of the development of this subject in Cuban compulsory school is associated first to the Swedish sloyd, followed by an influence of the Industrial Arts from The United States and lately the polytechnic education as developed in the Soviet Union and Easter European bloc. A communality along the historical development of the subject is related to the influence of Cuban philosopher such as Felix Varela and Jose Marti who considered practical oriented subjects in school to be highly beneficial for the holistic development of the individual. This chapter looks briefly to the historical transitions of a subject that today (20020) is to be consider of core importance for vocational education and training but due to its relevance as motivation for practical oriented profession and as a way to develop different skills of relevance for the future work life of the students.
