Im Allgemeinen versteht man unter ‚heroische Tugend‘ eine außergewöhnliche Tugendhaftigkeit, die einen Grad moralischer Vortrefflichkeit bezeichnet, der normale menschliche Fähigkeiten übersteigt oder den Menschen als göttliche Gabe verliehen wird. Die Vorstellung, dass eine solche übermenschliche Tugend existiert, erwies sich als nützliches Konzept für die Begründung und in der Rhetorik monarchischer Regierungsformen im vormodernen Europa. Im mittelalterlichen und frühneuzeitlichen Europa wurde es zunehmend üblich, fürstliche Tugenden und heroische Tugenden synonym zu begreifen, da die Helden der klassischen Geschichte und Mythologie für die Monarchen zu wichtigen Identifikationsfiguren wurden. Diese politische Begriffsverwendung der heroischen Tugend als „Fürstentugend“ stellt eine eigenständige historische Entwicklung dar, die jedoch Ähnlichkeiten zu einem sich parallel herausbildenden religiösen Begriffsverständnis aufweist, das der heroischen Tugend eine bedeutende Rolle in den Heiligsprechungsverfahren der gleichen Periode zuweist.

This article explores the problem of innate, natural talent vs acquired skill, knowledge, and virtue in dissertations from Uppsala University around 1680. These texts have never before been studied. It discusses questions such as: how did Swedish academics of the period conceive the relationship between ingenium (innate potential) and (acquired) virtue or knowledge? Which teaching methods did they advocate? How do the texts relate to developments in seventeenth century society? The study uses a combination of contextual analysis and a ‘history of concepts’ approach to answer these questions. The analysis reveals that the Swedish dissertations respond to contemporary debates (involving well-known authorities such as Vives, Huarte, Erasmus, and Comenius) and that they were affected by the immediate context: the growth of the early modern state and the social mobility which accompanied that growth. Education is described in Renaissance humanist terms, with a clear affinity to moral philosophical concepts such as virtue and habituation. The learning process described is analogous to the acquisition of moral virtue and education itself is to a large extent legitimated with reference to moral socialization. The educational ideas put forward balance discipline and playfulness, and represent a relatively democratic view of the distribution of human capabilities, showing a great trust in the potential of education. However, there is also a distinct stress on medical explanations of differences in individual talent.

This book argues that pre-modern societies were characterized by the quest for 'virtue '. The concept of virtue, complicated and much fought-over, permeated society, encouraging wisdom, courage, and justice, while simultaneously legitimizing social hierarchies based on sex and nationality. By examining pedagogical texts, rituals, performances, and images, this book illuminates the evolution of virtue through time, helping readers understand the guiding principles of historical action.

This article aims to survey the field of current historical research on the theme of virtue, and this field is found to be highly diverse and characterized by cross-disciplinary collaboration. The concept of virtue and systems of virtue ethics are relevant in a number of different types of research approaches. The most important of these include studies on political ideas and conceptions of society in broad terms, the history of religion, and gender studies. Among promising research problems, a prominent feature is the tenuous relationship between classical (pagan) philosophy and a Christian church and establishment, just like the related problem of man's sinfulness and evil nature, which seems to render worldly virtues irrelevant. However, this did not prevent it from remaining a highly significant concept through the 17th and 18th centuries. Finally, the author argues for a more developed use of sociological and conceptual history methodology in historical studies on virtue ethics.
