Title [sv]
Hur kan skolan minska ojämlika utbildningsmöjligheter?
Title [en]
How can schools reduce inequalities in educational opportunities?
Abstract [en]
From the 1990s and onwards, the Swedish educational system has gradually undergone reforms that have further increased the gap between children with differences in home resources. Whether or not inequalities (in home resources) change/do not change, depends on school composition (i.e. students’ backgrounds such as class, ethnicity and learning difficulties); b) the school culture (i.e. how inclusive and supportive the social and pedagogical environment is for all students). Depending on these two factors, the effect of schools on students’ initial inequalities may be; neutral (no effect), accelerating or compensatory. The aim of this project is to explore when, where and how school composition and school culture affect each other and may increase or reduce inequalities in academic achievement of students with different backgrounds. The main research question is; How can school composition and school culture contribute to enhancing the compensatory effect of schools, and reduce inequalities in educational opportunities for students with different backgrounds? A comparison between three different types of schools will be conducted; a) those that during the previous three years have had the best results, b) those with constantly poor educational results, and, c) those that have improved their poor educational results. The project’s methodological design is inspired by a mixed-method approach.
