Forskningen visar hur två affektiva skiften ägde rum i den gustavianska kulturen under Gustav III:s regeringstid. En förskjutning från en adligt präglad sensibilitet till en borgerlig sentimentalitet uppstod under 1770- och 1780-talet, vilket följdes av en åtstramande reaktion under sent 1780-tal.Opera är central i studien, som den konstform kungen valde ut som sitt redskap för en genomgripande kulturell förnyelse, med formeringen av en svensk nation som mål. En återverkan återfinns i den gustavianska litteraturen, bildkonsten, taldramat och arkitekturen – liksom i trädgårdskonsten. Förnyelsen uppstod i ett samhälle där de lägre stånden genom kungen åtnjöt en tilltagande makt på bekostnad av adeln och där en marknad för konsterna uppstod.På så sätt visar sig den gustavianska erans värld. Därmed åstadkoms ett nytt sätt att närma sig denna period, där den gustavianska kulturen behandlas som en väsentlig del av det sena 1700-talets europeiska kultur, i stället för att vara perifer.Syftet med denna forskning är att klargöra den verkan som det affektiva har på kulturell och social förändring. Affektivitet ses därmed inte som en följd av historisk eller samhällelig förändring, utan som en dimension som kan vara grundläggande för denna förändring. Begreppet patem – det affektivas grund – är avgörande för denna genomlysning av den gustavianska kulturen.

"The research shows that two affective shifts took place in the Gustavian culture under the reign of Gustav III. During the 1770s and 1780s, a nobiliary sensibility was replaced by a bourgeoise sentimentality, followed by a fortifying reaction in the late 1780s.Opera is central to the study, being the king’s vehicle for a pervasive cultural renewal, with the goal to achieve the formation of a Swedish nation. Repercussions can be discerned on the Gustavian literature, visual arts, spoken drama and architecture – and in gardening, too. The renewal appeared in a society where the king gave the lower estates power at the cost of the nobility and where a market for the arts emerged.The world of the Gustavian era is disclosed in this way. Hereby, a new approach to the period is achieved, where Gustavian culture is treated as an important part of the late eighteenth-century culture of Europe, instead of being peripheral.The aim of the research is to elucidate the affective import on cultural and social change. Affectivity is therefore not seen as the outgrowth of historical and societal change, but as a dimension which can be fundamental to these events. The concept of patheme – the ground of affectivity – is crucial to this elucidation of the Gustavian culture.
