Abstract [en]

This thesis observed curatorial acts when staging the reperformances within the exhibition Marina Abramović — The Cleaner 18/02/2017 — 21/05/2017 at Moderna Museet, Stockholm. The curatorial acts and the reperformances were approached through philosopher John Langshaw Austin’s performativity theory and philosopher Jacques Derrida’s development and reading of said theory, emphasizing the significance of iterability in performativity. The curatorial acts were read as acts of framing, according to the work of art historian Mieke Bal. One precondition was the heterochronic nature of art, another that curatorial acts are performative. The research question was; how were the reperformances approached curatorially in this exhibition, and how did the approach transform the performance pieces? The thesis reading of performativity and heterochrony met in the notion of iterability. Iterability is an act essential to performativity, made possible in an heterochronic timeline. The aspect of the heterochronic served as a lens through which the material was read. The observation led to the conclusion that the heterochronic complexity and otherness status of reperformances demand further curatorial framing within an exhibition. Another result was that the transformation of the performance through its reperformances made the pieces persistent. A third result was that the iterability of the works in the form of reperformance were added curatorially in a later state than the emergence of the original work.
