Abstract [en]

In 2009, personal property of the legendary Swedish theatre director and filmmaker Ingmar Bergman (1918-2007) was put up for auction. This special event displayed pieces from Bergman's home on the island of Faro, Sweden. There is sufficient documentation that strengthens the fact that music was a lifelong source of creativity for Bergman. Thanks to scholarship by the Bergman Estate on Faro, a closer examination of the collection was made in 2017. No 45 rpm singles or predecessors like 78 rpm shellac discs, only LPs, music cassettes, and compact discs were found in the collection. With the purpose to prepare a discography that can aid future research, the collection has been classified into six different genres, and then a more focused division to include composers/originators, performers, title of the phonogram, record company/label/issue number. There were 548 albums (editions with one or more discs and boxes) in Bergman's record collection. Of these albums, approximately 75 percent contained classical music. A visual inspection of the LPs show that most of them met high quality standards. The discography shows that the music itself, as well as the performances, seem to have been of greater importance to Bergman than to have specific series from record companies. Moreover, the discography shows that many of the albums, especially discs in the genres for Jazz and Revue and Various Artists, World Music . . . , were gifts from different people to Ingmar Bergman and his wife Ingrid.
