Abstract [en]

Recent studies suggest that the use of code-switching (henceforth CS), the alternating between two or more languages (English and Swedish in the present study), carries various teaching advantages. This thesis aims to investigate attitudes towards CS among educators and learners in a Swedish upper secondary school in Stockholm. Five English teachers were interviewed and 42 students were administered a questionnaire in order to investigate their experiences with CS usage in the English classroom, their attitudes towards CS and their view of current curriculum recommendations. This study documents practical advantages of using CS as a pedagogical and sociological tool in class which can appear as contradictory to the current curriculum recommendations. The findings indicate that there are indeed misconceptions among the teachers regarding the curriculum’s recommendations for language use, that there is a discrepancy between the teachers’ perception of CS and how they actually use it in English as a Foreign Language class, and a misconception among students regarding both their use of CS as well as their motivations for using it.
