What the churches tell us (engelsk)
Abstract [en]

About 90 per cent of the medieval churches in the Province of Uppland remain more or less intact, and no less than one hundred of them are quite unchanged since the Late Middle Ages. Thus, if correctly interpreted, they should be capable of constituting an historical source and enriching our knowledge of times gone by.

The object of this thesis is to record the architecture and furnishings of the parish churches during a scantily studied period of one hundred years, 1250-1350; the aim is also to show how this information may be used to shed light on various problems. First, an inventory is made of the Uppland churches, and variations in architecture and furnishings are recorded. Possibilities of dating the churches are discussed. Pending scientific methods, stylistic datings of roods and sculptured Madonnas must be employed in order to determine the churches as to time.

One of the historical problems dealt with is whether, during this period, private persons had parish churches built at their own expense. Since the most select churches of the time were built of brick, the analysis of their architecture is particularly thorough. This analysis proved that the brick churches were individually designed, indicating specific requirements from those who had them built. These requirements did not benefit the peasants of the parishes in question, which were dominated by large estates. These estates belonged to the most exalted men and women of the realm, who, by their riches and standing, were probably those who ordered the building of the churches.

The thesis shows that distribution maps of churches and furnishings from various phases of the Middle Ages may be implemented in order to mirror the development of settled and unsettled areas as well as the economy. In this fashion, it was also possible to discuss the structure and stratification of the parishes from a new aspect. The church parishes of northern Uppland were probably formed as late as the mid-13th century.
