Abstract [en]

The watching of films/series as well as the use of social media is common amongst young people, social media especially. There have been previous studies about the usage of social media and films/series watching in English. However, this study focused specifically on language acquisition and the effects of English films/series and social media on the receptive vocabulary capacity of ESL students in Sweden. In order to investigate the research questions, a quantitative method was used: A questionnaire collecting behavioural data on the students and a Vocabulary Levels Test, measuring the student’s receptive vocabulary proficiency. The participants consisted of 25 students in upper secondary school. The results indicated that there was no significant effect of English films/series and social media on students’ vocabulary proficiency, meaning that whether the students used Swedish or English subtitles and/or spent more or less time on films/series and social media, there was no significant difference.
