Abstract [en]

This text examines the situation of contemporary art and namely performance art in Murmansk region in the northwest part of Russia. The aim is to present a broader picture of the region’s overall geographical, socio-political and cultural disposition. It addresses the gap in any up-to-date research that would offer a comprehensive description of the region’s art scene. The area, similarly to its neighbouring districts and other peripheral parts of Russia, deals with lack of infrastructure, funding, and awareness of contemporary art movements on both national and international level. The local art scene lacks a sustainable framework for contemporary art, in terms of institutional, artist-run and individual artists’ support. Nonetheless, Murmansk’s art sector has a rare advantage due to its geographical location within the Barents Region, and as part of the Barents Cooperation. This unique positioning results in international funding and exchange possibilities inaccessible in other peripheral regions in Russia. Two examples of local art activity in the Murmansk Region serve as case-study, supported by interviews done in situ with local artists and curators. The situation of the contemporary art scene in the region is further examined in relation to three lines of discourse; firstly the theory surrounding the concept of biennial art, discussing cultural and economic implications of such a format; secondly as related to the point of view of the spectacle, or spectacular event, as means of addressing lack of audience, awareness and funding resources; and finally in relation to the history of performance art in Russia.
