Design approaches for the development of health care: A reflection over design methods and -skills in health care innovation and development

Abstract [en]

Design thinking has the potential to become highly relevant in the future development of health care. The main underlying notion is the strength in visionary and permissive development methods that design thinking facilitates. The formulation of visionary future goals is central and can function as a tool to enable a multitude of disciplines such as technology or management, as well as internally within health care, to align their development processes in a more person-centered and future oriented manner. Three design methods and -skills are suggested to be of high relevance in future development of health care: user-centeredness, iterative work processes and visualization skills. There is a large diversity of “users” in health care ranging from patients, doctors, nurses or cleaning personnel to clinic managers or the patients’ relatives. Reaching an understanding of the users is suggested to be done by situated observations and contextual interviews. The iterative work process is concerned with the Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles that are fundamental in design; exploring ideas and hypotheses as early as possible in the work process and in conjunction with the users. The visualization skills of the designer can facilitate this continuous communication and bridge the gap between considerably different stakeholders as mentioned above.
