Abstract [en]

Phraseology examines large chunks of preconstructed language, fixed expressions or multi-word lexical items, phenomena rather difficult to define, identify and measure. Scholars conclude that more than half of our language is composed of formulaic structures and argue that proficiency in the target language and educational attainment correlate with the frequency of formulaic structures present in a speaker’s language. In contrast to the literature reviewed here, this paper does not view L2 speakers of English as a homogenous group. Instead it compares two distinctive speaker profiles composed of academic students and non-academic gamers in order to examine the frequency and distribution of various formulaic structures among these two populations. The observations in this paper indicate that educational attainment and proficiency in the target language do not correlate with a high frequency of formulaic structures, results emphasizing the important relationship between speaker profiles and sociolects.
