Abstract [en]

The following essay aims to reach a deeper understanding about the music platform Boiler Room in order to draw conclusions about its cultural relevance and gain insight about the contemporary climate that pervades the Internet. In The Culture of Connectivity José Van Dijck presents an analytical prism that can be used to view techno-cultural as well as socio-economic aspects that shapes the underlying structures of a social media platform. The socio-economic aspect of this model has been eliminated in order to make following study more consistent. User agency, technology and content are the three elements that form the techno-cultural layer. In order to explore notions about user agency a methodology for analyzing web-based qualitative data was applied to explore user-generated comments submitted on Boiler Rooms YouTube page. Outcomes included a knowledge about occurring themes in the comment section, these patterns where used to draw conclusions about the formats appealing and less appealing features.

The remaining elements technology and content were explored through interaction criticism, this approach was proved useful in order to examine the technical constructs that underlie the platform and therefore reach insight in how Boiler Rooms ideology is manifested in their content. The three constitutive elements where then comprehended to reveal that the cultural relevance lies in Boiler Rooms approach to engage an audience that is increasingly divided by both channel and taste. The final conclusion is that Boiler Room can be viewed as a cultural product that is greatly shaped by its cultural context, which makes the product relevant today, but where will it be tomorrow?
