Abstract [en]
The field of gender and language is young, and the field of gender, language and equestrianism is even younger and unexplored. Most previous research investigates how media comment on equestrians; however, this essay investigates how riders themselves comment on their performance. The essay consists of a corpus-based quantitative study of how twelve British equestrians comment on their performances in media. The study investigates the occurrences of content verbs, tag questions, hedges and certain adjectives. These linguistic features were chosen based on previous research which showed that they characterize female speech. The result shows a more hesitant language among male riders and the female riders present a both assertive and hesitant language, thus both contradicting and confirming previous research. However, the study shows some signs of possibilities that the language among equestrians is more equal than previous research results regarding differences between female and male language.
