Abstract [en]

By studying artist Jockum Nordström and his art this thesis seeks to investigate the question if Swedish contemporary art could play a crucial role in critiquing the ideology of nationalism in the 21st century. The current political climate in Europe arguably has a heavy tendency towards the ideology of nationalism and with this as a backdrop the research follows two pathways: one is to highlight how the inspiration of Nordström comes from one Sámi artist and one artist who allegedly was mentally ill. Both of the artists are visible in his art, but would by nationalism not be considered as Swedish. Nordström’s art is exhibited as Swedish art both nationally and internationally. The other path takes inspiration from artist Jean Dubuffet who in the aftermath of the Second World War and after the revelation of the Holocaust founded art movement art brut that looked for inspiration from the outcasts of society because according to him they were pure and untouched by the tainted society. As the art of Nordström has many similarities with art brut and Dubuffet, could also his art take a stand outside of nationalism? In conclusion I believe that Nordström’s art as Swedish contemporary art could play a crucial role in in critiquing the ideology of current Swedish nationalism. His art includes a diversity that is exhibited as Swedish art and culture. Further, his art invites the others in rather than see them as a threat to him or his identity in art, which would be the opposite of nationalism who want to keep the threat away. In a way his art also make the viewer to position himself outside and take a closer look at the current society.
