Abstract [en]

This is a report of how Italian for beginners was assessed in light of the current Swedish foreign language syllabus (Gy11). Two groups of upper secondary school students (N = 55, aged 16) were involved. The three main parts of the syllabus are introduced (the aim of the subject, the core contents and the knowledge requirements) and the importance it attaches to developing learners’ communicative competence. The various learning activities that were used are also briefly presented. The main focus of the article is on the assessment procedures that were implemented and the challenges they presented, which were of both practical and theoretical nature.
