Stockholm University, Faculty of Humanities, Department of English.
2016 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

Disciplinary differences within genre analysis have been discussed extensively from a multitude of perspectives. The focus of this paper was to investigate what kind of reporting verbs different disciplines use in conjunction with citations, differences in frequency of citations and the pedagogical implications of disciplinary conventions. Five articles were chosen at random from three different peer-reviewed journals for a total of 15 articles. A qualitative and quantitative approach was used to analyze the reporting verbs found in conjunction with citations. The fields for the journals were linguistics, geography and medicine. The findings of this article indicate that there are discipline specific conventions in regards to what reporting verbs are used as well as differences in frequency between the disciplines that were examined. The article discusses the pedagogical implications of these differences.
