“He is a savage, a barbarous and ignorant savage, and knows what he does”: A study of the accuracy of Cooper’s portrayals of Indians in The Last of the Mohicans.

Abstract [en]

James Fenimore Cooper’s writing has created large critical debates, deriving from his sympathetic portrayals of the Indian culture. Studies have been made in defense of Cooper but also many criticize his writing. Although previous research has been done on Cooper’s novels, very few have covered the field of historical accuracy of the portrayals. Based on the earlier studies this thesis has teased out the accuracy of the portrayals of Indians in Cooper’s novel The Last of the Mohicans. The findings were that that the portrayals were not accurate, yet valuable, since they hold a meaningful value structure that can be taught or simply read for pleasure. Since Cooper has never fully claimed himself to be accurate, one can not accuse him of breaking any rules or for being inaccurate.
