Abstract [en]

The present study aims to examine Swedish teachers’ feedback on a single upper-secondary student’s English writing. The feedback is mainly examined with the purpose of tracing the amount of suggestions/encouragement for specified language knowledge components. The feedback is also examined through six specific aspects: length of feedback, structure of feedback, the amount of positive comments in feedback, grading in feedback, specificity and error-correction. The comments in the feedback were analysed in two parts: continual comments and concluding comments. After the analysis it was found that the six teachers involved had different focuses, but all of them focused mainly on content of the student script. It was also found that the teachers commented mostly on grammatical issues in the continual comments and in the concluding comments they focused more on the text as an entity. Research has showed that the concluding comment should include suggestions for the student to focus on and improve; the student will tend to focus more on textual knowledge, since the feedback in the concluding comments suggests so.
