Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to examine the mobile dating application Tinder. How do people integrate and communicate at Tinder and what social aspects of communication seem to create a relationship? How do couples that met on Tinder experience the application? To answer these questions the qualitative methods interviews and ethnographical observations has been used. The theoretical framework is Bourdieu's theory about Physical Capital and Goffmans theory about Social Interaction. The study shows that more than just a “swipe right” is required for communication to occur. Tinder is in many ways superficial and at the conversation-level “emojis” becomes a complement in the shortcomings of a non-face-to-face integration. The offline-world’s patterns also turned out to characterize the Tinder-world with its body ideals, class differences and gender norms. In conclusion, after passing several integration and conversation barriers, the study shows that love could actually be found on Tinder.
