American, British or Mid-Atlantic: Attitudes of English teachers in Sweden towards different varieties of English

Abstract [en]

This essay examines English teachers in Sweden’s attitudes towards American and British varieties of English through a survey. The survey is concerned with what variety the teachers claim to use when teaching, what variety they believe to be most beneficial for their students to use and what they actually use when teaching. The results of the study show that teachers differ in what they claim to use while teaching. Some claim to only use one variety because of convenience while others use many different varieties because they want the students to be exposed to more than one variety. A majority of the teachers believe that it is beneficial for the students to learn more than one variety. The teachers mix both American and British when teaching, using a so called Mid-Atlantic variety, however leaning more towards an American variety of English rather than a British. Furthermore, the study also observes an increasing positive attitude towards American English as well as age and gender being factors that affect attitudes. What level the teacher teaches at does not however affect the varieties used in teaching.
