Abstract [en]

The study analyzes the managerial behavior of Finnish and Swedish managers in three Finnish corporations and their Swedish subsidiaries. Both quantitative and qualitative material is used. Among the quantitative material are national interview surveys, and the qualitative methods include in-depth interviews with Finnish and Swedish executives and secretaries, observations in natural settings and analyses of mass media content. The point of departure for the analysis is that "reality" is culturally constructed. The focus is therefore on the situations where the "realities" of the Finns and the Swedes do not overlap. In the Finnish and Swedish companies there are differences in the means of transmitting messages, in the way an argument is carried, in the means of showing respect to one’s counterpart, in providing feed-back and in giving instructions. The role models for leadership differ. These differences are to be sought in the ways the hierarchy is expressed in everyday interaction within the companies. There are differences in the decision-making process. In Finnish companies decisions are geared more towards generating action, in Swedish companies the emphasis is on ensuring the engagement of the personnel. Finally, the headquarters-subsidiary relationship is analyzed and attention is drawn to the structural conflicts common in any headquarters-subsidiary relationship, irrespective of nationality.
