Abstract [en]

An investigation of the nuclear region in the type 1 Seyfert galaxy NGC 7469 has been made. Optical and ultraviolet spectra obtained for this project have been used, as well as additional ultraviolet spectra and various data from the literature.

From the width and shape of the COUlD lines at 4959 and 5007 A, it is suggested here that the extended region of low-density gas, emitting the narrow lines, is divided into two subregions. The broad-line- emitting gas, lying closer to the center of the nucleus, probably also consists of two (or perhaps more) subsystems, as suggested from the differences in width of the broad Balmer lines.

Studies of variations in the ultraviolet continuum at 1500 A and the broad CIV line at 1549 A show the CIV-emitting clouds to be located at a distance of 0.02 parsec from the continuum source in the center.

A possible model for the nucleus of NGC 7469, taking into account the asymmetries of the optical and ultraviolet strong emission lines, is presented. According to this model, gas is in outward motion from the center, thus confirming both earlier results obtained within this project and results from investigations by other observers.

Decomposition of the ultraviolet excess emission suggests radiation from a blackbody with T = 20000 K, probably an accretion disk surrounding a massive (0.7x10* M«,) black hole in the very center of NGC 7469.
