Abstract [en]

In this issue of the journal we present a forum on a current topic of key sociolinguistic interest to both linguists and the wider population in Europe and elsewhere, that is, the expected future of the English language in a reconfigured Europe after the impending British exit (or ‘Brexit’) from Europe. The key document discussed in this forum is a position paper from Marko Modiano, which has drawn a number of responses from leading linguists across the field of world Englishes. We are sincerely thankful to Modiano for initiating this forum, and grateful also to all those that have contributed their responses to his article, which has resulted, we believe, in an insightful and lively discussion of the sociolinguistics of English and multilingualism in contemporary Europe.
