In a language, it is common that some words have more than one meaning or more than one function and in this way more than one definition. The French language is not an exception. Given its ambiguity, the French word alors can be seen as an adverb and a discourse marker. In this study, the usage of alors in three French Internet forums is analyzed, as well as the occurrence of three types of the marker. More precisely, the syntactical position, the semantic meaning and the pragmatic function of alors is examined. Here, it is categorized into three groups: alors temporel with a temporal meaning, alors consécutif with a consecutive meaning and alors discursif with a reinforcing function. This research has confirmed the ambiguity of the marker, which has been proven by the fact that all of the functions of alors found in the Internet forums have not been mentioned in the dictionaries and in the articles needed for this study. Additionally, this research has pointed out that the alors temporel seems rare in the Internet users’ language and alors consécutif and alors discursif more frequent. Alors consécutif is used the most.
