Många av de yrken som finns representerade inom yrkeslärarutbildningar ställer krav på såväl teknisk som estetisk kompetens. Balansen dessa emellan kan däremot se lite olika ut beroende på yrket. För floristen eller skräddaren är det väsentligt att skapa en produkt som är vacker att titta på för kunden, för kocken är det viktigt att kunna servera måltiden på ett sätt som förstärker smakupplevelsen. Förutom att reparera bilar bygger bilmekanikern om och lackerar bilar. Allt detta är aktiviteter som kräver ett mått av estetisk kompetens. I det här kapitlet argumenterar jag för att elevernas interaktioner i yrkeslärarklassrummet påverkar utrymmet för estetik. Mer specifikt har jag tittat på hur uttryck för humor, självsäkerhet och osäkerhet påverkar utrymmet för eleverna att utveckla teknisk respektive estetisk kompetens i undervisningen. Analysen bygger på detaljerade analyser av videotranskriptioner av elevers interaktioner i undervisningssituationer. Materialet har analyserats med hjälp av begrepp hämtade från samtalsanalys och diskursiv psykologi. Resultaten kan sammanfattas som att uttryck för självsäkerhet och humor på andras bekostnad begränsar utrymmet för estetiskt erfarande medan osäkerhet och humor om samhälleliga fenomen öppnar utrymme för estetiskt erfarande.

Many vocations represented within vocational education demands both technical and aesthetical competences. The balance between these two are different depending on the particular vocation. For the florist or the tailor aesthetics it’s is an important aspect of the output, for the chef it is important to present the dinner in a way that increases the overall experience for the customer. Apart from repairing cars the mechanic rebuilds and paints cars. All these are activities that demands a certain amount of aesthetical competence, apart from technical competencies. In this chapter I argue that the students’ interactions within the vocational educational setting affects the opportunities to make aesthetical experiences. In particular I have studied how expressions of humour, self-confidence and insecurity affects the opportunities for the students to develop technical and aesthetical competencies respectively. The study is video ethnographical and the analysis build upon detailed transcriptions of the students’ interactions using concepts from conversation analysis and discursive psychology. In summary, the results show that expressions of self-confidence and humour on behalf of others diminishes opportunities to make aesthetical experiences whereas humour about social conduct in general and expressions of insecurity rather increases the opportunities for the students to engage in aesthetical practices.
