Long synonymous with post–Cold War chaos, starvation, refugees, and competing, stateless armed groups (sometimes framed as Islamic), Somalia has become one of the many African and Asian arenas on which academic expertise focused. Be they framed in terms of conflict resolution, peace studies, or post-conflict development, academic and NGO-affiliated actors have created a veritable industry of knowledge out of northeastern Africa. War and Peace in Somalia is a remarkable example of such productive possibilities.
