Smycken och Materialval: Materialets roll för tingens agens
Stockholm University, Faculty of Humanities, Department of Culture and Aesthetics.
2024 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

The essay explores the agency of jewellery by stressing its materiality and choice of materials. This is accomplished through the examination and analysis of three items of jewellery, whichvary in their choice of materials and their design. A gold ring set with sapphires and diamonds, asilver brooch made by prominent Swedish silversmith K. Edwin (Wiwen) Nilsson, and a castiron necklace from the early 19th century. The agency of the three pieces of jewellery isexamined through the lens of Bruno Latour's actor network theory and W.J.T Mitchell's theoriesof surplus value and fetishism. The essay concludes that the choice of material is of greatimportance for a thing's agency, primarily when related to material desire. Furthermore, immaterial values are just as important when examining the agency of jewellery. Theseimmaterial values are either completely non-physical, as in the case of a thing’s history, or makethemselves known, as in the case of agency provided by artistry and craftsmanship, throughstamps or hallmarks.
