In 1676 the man-of-war Kronan sank during the battle of Öland. Excavations have been carried out at the site since 1981. In 2005 a major coin hoard was found. It contained 6,115 Swedish 4-öre 1675 as well as 167 talers and ½ talers mainly from Germany (43), Habsburg domains (23) and the Netherlands (87). The 4-öre pieces must have come straight from the mint. The conservation process is described and the coins are listed and the context including the function is discussed.
