A variação entre proposições adverbiais infinitivas e conjuntivas: Subjectificação e espaços mentais

Abstract [en]

The present article examines the variation between infinitival and subjunctive adverbial clauses in European Portuguese from a cognitivist perspective. In accordance with the notion of linguistic iconicity, it is argued that the conceptual difference between these clauses is due to a higher degree of conceptual complexity in the adverbial subjunctive clauses than in the infinitival ones. This conceptual complexity is further explained by the notion of subjectification – a higher degree of speaker involvement in the linking between a communicative event (the ground) and the linguistic expression – which is manifested in the dislocation from one paternal mental space to another mental space with the feature [-control]. This feature indicates a minor possibility to interact with the propositional content of the event described in the adverbial clause.
