Joseph Conrads berättelse "Amy Foster" läses, efter Edward Said, som en allegorisering av exilerfarenheten, i vilken språket och kulturella koder står i centrum. Den andra halvan av artikeln utvidgar perspektivet till att omfatta Conrads havsberättelser, vilka diskuteras utifrån Michel Foucaults begrepp "heterotopi".
