This paper is part of my thesis which concerns changes in the landscape from the Iron Age to the 19th century, in the province of Ångermanland in the middle of northern Sweden. The paper discusses the antiquarian traveler Nils Johan Ekdahl (1799-1870) who made several antiqurian journeys around Sweden. In 1826 he visited Gotland and in the years 1827-1830 he made several journeys to northern Sweden. His work has not been published, but the Antiquerian-Topographical Archive (ATA) of the National Heritage Board in Stockholm holds a huge material with detailed annotations and drawings from his journeys. The works of Ekdahl has primarily been used for finding ancient monuments that due to cultivation have gone missing. In this paper I will however focus upon the intentions that Ekdahl had with his work, his interpretations and on what basis he made his conclusions. I will also make an attempt to discuss the position of Ekdahl in the context of the 19th century antiquarians and his relation to the Royal Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities in Sweden
