Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This essay examines how the mythological character Medusa has been represented in four selected works of art from the 16th century, 17th century, 19th century, and 21st century. The study reveals how Medusa has been depicted within different artistic traditions. The research questions focus on how the visual representation of Medusa has evolved throughout the different time periods. The essay also sheds light on how patriarchal structures in society are reflected and how the motif of Medusa mirrors her cultural significance. The artworks will be analyzed using iconographic methodology and feminist theory in separate chapters. The study demonstrates that the portrayal of Medusa has been influenced by the artistic traditions of the time when the works were created. The research shows that patriarchal structures are evident in all the artworks and that Medusa's cultural significance is reflected in the art.
