When the World Trade Centre, an image of the financial world, was attacked September 11, 2001 it had an immediate effect on the financial markets. In Sweden we experienced a heavy decline on the Stockholm Stock Exchange. This made us interested in how the Stock Exchange reacts to exceptional occurrences such as international catastrophes. Are there any differences in the intensity of the reaction according to whether it was due to terrorism, war or a natural disaster? We decided to further look into how the Stockholm Stock Exchange reacted to the Gulf War, the Kobe Earthquake and the World Trade Centre Attack. Our research question to this dissertation was formed: How the Stockholm Stock Exchange Reacted to Three Different Catastrophes.
