Abstract [en]

The global banking industry has experienced high merger and acquisitions (M&A) activity during the last decade leading to local and regional consolidation of the banking industries. Fundamental causes of this kind of consolidation process can be divided into motives for consolidation and environmental factors influencing the form and pace of consolidation. These two are in actual reality intertwined. Our purpose is to examine advantages of a merger that are related to improvements in cost savings, revenues and income by doing an efficiency and profitability analysis using financial ratios. In other words, we are searching for evidence that the merger of Merita- and Nordbanken has produced gains in efficiency and profitability, which together we will call performance.
