Art and Organizational Culture: The Impact of Aesthetics on Organizational Culture
Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
If used thoughtfully and effectively, art can make an organization sublime. Art can be used within an organization to help manage and create an organizational culture and an internal identity. Art and organizational culture examines the possibilities offered and threats posed by art and objects d’art in organizational culture by investigating the nature and philosophy of art and theories regarding agency and organizational culture. We introduce the notion of the art champion, and create a framework for theories about both organizational culture and art. We incorporate Alfred Gell´s notion of art and agency within an organizational framework. We look not at “art” that is produced by the organization (logotypes etc) but the art that is consumed by the organization. Since we argue that art has the ability to transmit certain feelings and values, albeit no universal ones, we expect the placement and consumption of art within the organizations to have impact on the organizational culture.
