New York City can be defined as the metropolitan of design and fashion. The city stands for top of the line fashion in clothing, home decorating, living and creating. New York City boasts one of the largest and most diverse economies in the world being the second largest economy in the US and the ninth largest economy in the world. Many design companies want to do business in New York City due to the immense population and profit potential of this city. However, New York City represents a highly hazardous market environment and especially small and medium sized (SME) design enterprises that control comparatively small resources, have found establishment of a long-term market presence in this market particularly problematic.
