Purchasing from China: Five Swedish cases
Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Academic research has paid much more attention to the export side than to the import side of companies, which has led to many theories and empirical studies explaining export success. A similar effort to explain global purchasing is, however, less common. Through the distribution of this thesis we want to highlight the strategic function of purchasing in general and, more specifically, increase the understanding of purchasing from China. Much of the import success of the Swedish companies H&M, IKEA and Coop builds on purchasing and manufacturing in China, which makes it an interesting area worth studying more closely. The thesis provides a holistic description of the underlying processes of purchasing from China. By means of case study research carried out in five, large Swedish companies – Ericsson, H&M, ICA, Coop and Åhléns - different factors to consider when purchasing from China are investigated. Determinants of price and critical success factors are also highlighted.
