Abstract [en]

On the first of May 2004 the European Union grew by ten members. Due to the enlargement creating the western world’s largest single market most West European companies have had a positive attitude towards this. The European Union has created the environmental acquis which require certain standards to be met by candidate countries before accession. Sweden has been active in promoting sustainable development both within the European Union and globally. This thesis concerns the role of Sweden as a predecessor on environmental protection and the opportunities that are created due to this on the new markets available within the EU. The focus will lay on which areas hold possibilities for Swedish industry and the prerequisites Sweden have for making use of these possibilities.
