The relationship between teacher and pupil: a qualitative study based on four Swedish school social workers perspective on teachers' difficulties in the interaction with students: a study of the interplay, self awareness & change (English)
In Sweden today there is a hot public debate in terms of knowledge, learning and grades, and in recent years various kinds of problems has increased among students, as mobbing, muddled classrooms, stress, depression, anxiety, various psychosomatic disorders and violations from teachers. These problems raises the question of what teachers could make to promote a good relationship between students - teacher, focusing on how the teacher communicates and relates with students, the very subject of this qualitative thesis. By interviewing four school social worker and interpret the results based on systems theory and psychodynamic theory, four specific problem-areas occurred: Uncertain leadership and lack of authority, Uncertainty in the professional role, Lack of support from the team and Ambivalence in the reception of school social workers advice and support. These themes have a great magnitude in causing interplay difficulties and the main crux shows a lack of self-awareness and psychological knowledge, moreover teachers' avoidance of acknowledging their personal shortcomings, but, the overall cause affecting these areas is structurally embedded problems. Results shows need for knowledge of the psycho-dynamic processes, psychosocial problems and the need for psychosocial supervision, but also that school managers require promoting a supportive and constructive professional collaboration.
