Funktionen von Modalverben in Überschriften von Zeitungsnachrichten: ein multilingualer Vergleich (Deutsch vs. Französisch, Portugiesisch, Spanisch)

Abstract [en]

This paper argues that in news headlines – owing to their high context sensitivity – modal verbs involve the reader mentally to a high degree. In order to understand the meaning of a headline containing a modal verb, the reader has to reconstruct the contexts selected by the author. He has to do this in the first place in interaction with his own contextualized stock of knowledge. Further, he will form a hypothesis about the degree of probability of the possible contexts. This process of reconstruction creates an expectation about the news itself. This basic function of modalverbs in news headlines is the same for the four languages considered in this paper (German, French, Portuguese and Spanish); nevertheless, there are some language-specific norms for their use and decoding. Themost salient example is the epistemic use of Portuguese poder ‘can’/‘may’and dever ‘must’ in the present tense.
