Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this research was to find out how women develop their interests in male-dominated technical university. The research questions made an attempt to reveal who could influence on the women’s choices of technical studies and how career counselor’s assistance and other factors contributed to these choices. Also to what extent women might find it useful. This might support the career counsellors to comprehend which potential factors influence on women's choices while undertaking technical studies. Also, how it may facilitate the equality between genders in the field of work. The research was conducted with the women who studies at two, male-dominated Bachelor of Science in Engineering programs at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Qualitative method with structured interviews was applied. The results displayed that parents and siblings to some extent influenced on women's choices but not career cancellers or friends. However final decision was taken by the women themselves. The majority of them achieved very good results in maths and physics. To conclude, the women themselves developed their interests in technics since they were gifted in maths and physics and were encouraged on this subject.
