This article discusses the architecture of two important museums i Gothenburg, both opened during the exhibition year 1923. Konstmuseet /the art museum) designed by Sigfrid Ericsson and Arvid Bjerke, dominates Götaplatsen with its Neo-Classical facad and influenced later additions to the square like the municipal theatre (by Bergsten) and the concert hall (by Nils Einar Erikson). It is also argued that the modernized Classicism of the art museum is a skilful adaption of Roman profane brick architecture which became a special chararcteristic of public building in Gothenburg. Naturhistoriska museet (science museum) was designed by Ernest Torulf in an eclectic style with sensitive classocal details in a traditional national-romantic setting. In conclusion, both buildings can be regarded as good examples of functional and influential museum architecture.
