Abstract [en]

The proposed postdoctoral project aims at investigatingthe continuity and dynamics of generationalchange in Sami reindeer herding enterprises in Swedenfrom about 1930 until the present day. Almost allreindeer herders are children and/or grandchildren toactive or retired reindeer herders. This circumstanceis the starting point of the proposed postdoctoralproject. The aim is however not to explain this phenomenonbut rather to place the interrelationshipswithin the Sami reindeer herding enterprise in focus.Semi-structured deep interviews will be the main methodto find out how the meeting between reindeerherding, family and individual takes form. The purposeis to understand which individual strategies and decisionsshape the pattern of succession within reindeerherding enterprises. Different forms of generationaltransfer have developed over long times which callsfor historical analysis. The aim of the historical analysisis to increase knowledge on how changes in mental, social, institutional and technical conditions duringthe 20th century relate to strategies for generationalchange. The project will also include a discussion ongender aspects of alternation of generations especiallyto shed light on what happens with the reindeerherding tradition in families that have only daughters.
