Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Self-esteem have been negatively linked to self-handicapping and procrastination. Self-handicapping and procrastination have also been linked to the traits of neuroticism and conscientiousness in the five factor model of personality. However, previous studies have not investigated whether self-esteem and the traits of the personality predict self-handicapping and procrastination to the same extent. This was the purpose of this study. A questionnaire was distributed to students in the field of psychology at Stockholm university and Mälardalens university. Established measurements were used; The Big Five Inventory Model (Zakrisson, 2010) and The Basic Self-esteem scale (Forsman and Johnson, 1996). The results indicated that the trait of conscientiousness was the strongest predictor of self-handicapping and procrastination. The second strongest predictor of self-handicapping was basic self-esteem, whereas the second strongest predictor of procrastination was openness. This study showed the importance of investigating further traits of personality in procrastination and different aspects of self-esteem in self-handicapping.
