For this thesis I examine two media representations of young women entering the world of modeling. The analysis is based on two episodes of the TV-show Top Model Sverige and the American critical documentary Girl Model and is executed in the light of feminist theories on postfeminist media culture as well as a transnational feminist media approach. Inspired by intersectional identity studies I examine how the media texts position the young women in relation to age, social class and socio-cultural background. Through critical discourse analysis I show that the two media text draws on similar elements and narratives in order to represent the fashion industry, however the construction of the young women differs widely through discourses drawn upon. I argue that Top Model Sverige discursively excludes identity categories in order to construct a glamorous world of modeling wherein the young women are yet fitted into ideals that favors western dominating norms of new femininities achieved through an uncritical consumption culture. Where as the representation of the young women, or girls in Girl Model emphasize their background, social class status and age as crucial for the young women’s expectations in life. A discourse that draws upon prostitution undermines the young women capabilities as agents in their own lives and contributes to a victimized image of them. I propose research further engaging critically in the complex world of fashion that is not bound by geographical borders, in order for us to be able to articulate constructive criticism on the effects the fashion industry has on so many levels in a global perspective.
