This study discusses unaccompanied refugee children and their relationship with the professionals in their environment. The purpose of this study was to examine the expectations and experiences that unaccompanied refugee children with permanent residence in Sweden had from relationships with guardians, social workers and accommodation staff. Eight interviews were performed with unaccompanied children between 15 and 18 years old. In this study, the theory of recognition was used. The findings demonstrate that the refugee children are dissatisfied with the relationships to the professionals regarding several aspects. There is a clear difference in how the guardian’s formal mission is described, compared to what the refugee children's opinions are regarding the assignment. Refugee children want a closer relationship in which the guardian is involved in the youth's life. Accommodation staff have appeared as important in the refugee’s life and is often experienced as a kind of family. The relationship with social workers have not been as important for our respondents as the relationship with guardians and accommodation staffs have been. In the relationship between the children and the professionals we have found three important dimensions. These are the professional’s availability, their awareness of the children and their needs of an informal relationship.
