Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to gain insights into the attitude preschool staff have towards mandatoryreporting of child maltreatment. The study is structured around three general questions: (1) Whatexperiences do the staff have of mandatory reporting? (2) What factors have an impact on theirdecision to report suspected child maltreatment to the social services? (3) To what degree do therelationships between the staff and colleagues, managers, parents, and social services, impact theattitude towards mandatory reporting? We conducted eight interviews with educated preschool staffin Stockholm. The results were analyzed thematically and based on theories on decision makingsupported by ideas of group dynamics. The results indicated insecurity and a lack of knowledgewhen it comes to routines, definitions and obligations on mandatory reporting. Many of theinformants also have a lack of education and information on the area. Another result were that thedecision making process is heavily influenced by the opinions of colleagues and managers. Theinformants also requested information and a closer cooperation with the social services. One of theconclusions is that if the law about mandatory report should work properly it needs continuousdiscussions between colleagues, managers and the social services.
