Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to examine the relationship between representations of masculine identity and suburban environments in three contemporary Swedish texts: Johannes Anyurus Det är bara gudarna som är nya (2003), Andrzej Tichýs Sex liter luft (2005) and Hassan Loo Sattarvandis Still (2007). The concrete suburbs built on the outskirts of Sweden’s bigger cities during the latter half of the twentieth century have always been regarded as different. They have also become increasingly associated with a certain form of narrative, and with a particular species of masculinity. The stereotypes, which we relate to a tower block environment, are equally recognized and challenged by Anyuru, Tichý and Sattarvandi. When shaping their characters’ identity, they use the symbolic meaning of the suburb to create stories about alienation and blankness.
